It's me, hi. I'm the chicken keeper, it's me

ABOUT ME

A02AA4D7-7784-4755-BB68-B75F14E6EE13.jpeg

I grew up in the incredibly small town of Harford, NY on 80 acres of fields and wooded area. Even though my family lived in the country, I would have never describe myself as it. We had the typical pets, a dog named Dude, then later, a cocker spaniel Mickie, and three cats: Tiger, Skeeter and Boo Boo Kitty. I dreamed of living in a suburban area like my friends with sidewalks and stores closer than the 30 minute commute I was used to.

When I met my husband in 2017, we moved into a home that overlooked a 50 acre field in Sackets Harbor, NY. There we created a busy wedding venue and a growing Christmas Tree Farm. In the spring of 2020, the global pandemic happened and we were granted the space and opportunity to reevaluate our future. We wanted to live somewhere different. Both of us realized we were not in love with the lifestyle and opportunities the little upstate NY town provided us with. My husband accepted a position near Cleveland, OH and we moved in the fall of 2021. My only request in a house was to have a sidewalk!

On a typical day during the late summer of 2022 my husband suggested we start a garden and "maybe get some chickens" next year. He was completely unprepared for the obsession these four words would turn into; and being honest, I was too. We found it ironic that I never had the desire to have chickens when lived on an abundance of land- but as soon as I only had 1/4 acre, CHICKEN OBSESSED.

Over the months leading up to my March 2023 hatch date I researched like I was writing a thesis paper. I knew what feed I should use, what common ailments I may face and how to treat them, the breeds, colors names, and coop must haves and must nots. To be honest, prior to my run-a-way obsession, I WAS SCARED OF BIRDS; But intrinsically, I just knew I was going to fall in love with my flock. The internal need and drive I felt for becoming a chicken keeper was nothing I had ever experienced before- it was almost like my soul was destined for these chickens.

So thats kinda how we got here. I have 8 chickens, an instagram dedicated to them and I find myself completely enthralled by them everyday. I hope following along you will learn, enjoy and hopefully decided chicken keeping is in your soul too. I'm here as a peer, educator and companion on your own journey!
